Fishing for beginning sounds

I love the Discovery Toys AB Seas Fishing Game for Speech! There are so many different things you can use it for, and the kids love it!  You could also use any fishing pole with magnet and make your own cards and attach a paper clip to them.

For Vocabulary Development: Have players name something that starts with the letter they fish out of the "sea". For more of a challenge and to practice categorization, pick a category and have them try to name things from that category starting with the letter they fished out. Categories might include animals, clothes, furniture, food, etc. For example, if the category is FOOD and the letter is P, they could say PIZZA or PEAS.

For Articulation Practice: Have players name items that start with the letter they fished out that also have their sound in them. If you have children that are working on their /r/ sound and a B letter was fished out, they could say BIRD or BREAK.

For Expressive Language Practice: Players can make a sentence starting with a word that begins with the letter they fished out. For example, if the letter pulled out is W, they could say "When I am tired, I will go to bed." Practice both articulation and expressive language by having the players use a word beginning with their sound in a sentence that starts with the letter they fished out. For example, if a child is working on word intial /s/ blends and they pull out an "A", they could say, "After breakfast I will go to SCHOOL."

You can also use the articulation or language cards you are already using with the children by simply sliding a paperclip on them and then they can be fished out with the magnetic fishing rod! By the way, the fishing poles are sturdy and I have not had any break for me, unlike some fishing poles I have tried! I only have three left on my game, but that is because I sent one home with a kid to use with his cards for homework, and it never came back. But no worries, I still have three left!
